How to Defeat Insecurity In a Shallow World

Mar 2, 2016

“It is sitting alone in a house during the quiet afternoon hours, wondering why the phone doesn’t ring….. wondering why you have no “real” friends. It is longing for someone to talk to, soul to soul, but knowing there is no such person worthy of your trust. It is feeling that “they wouldn’t like me if they knew the real me.” It is becoming terrified when speaking to a group of your peers, and feeling like a fool when you get home. It is wondering why other people have so much more talent and ability than you do. It is feeling incredibly ugly and sexually unattractive. It is admitting that you have become a failure as a wife and mother. It is disliking everything about yourself and wishing, constantly wishing, you could be someone else. It is feeling unloved and unlovable and lonely and sad. It is lying in bed after the family is asleep, pondering the vast emptiness inside and longing for unconditional love. It is intense self-pity. It is reaching up in the darkness to remove a tear from the corner of your eye. It is depression.”  This passage comes directly out of a book written by one of America’s leading psychologists and marriage/family therapist, Dr. James Dobson. (I’ll link his book HERE – it is a must read).

Some of you are all too familiar with Dr. Dobson’s words. They strike a deep cord that no one knows about, and you hope no one ever will.

If that’s you, I encourage you to stop reading and get on your knees in prayer.

List off everything that makes you feel like you just don’t measure up.

Pray out loud that God would rid your heart of these heavy and overwhelming thoughts.

If you are one of the lucky ones who have yet to experience low self worth to, be grateful. I bet if you’re honest, you’ll find that you too have struggled with inferiority or self doubt at some point or another. Every woman has. Some of us suppress it and others are paralyzed by it. Either way, you need to face your insecurities head on.

The next time you just don’t feel good enough, combat these powerful thoughts with God’s truth:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” – Psalm 139: 13-16

The development of human life is not to be taken lightly. God used His power to create you and protect you while inside of your mother’s womb. He used His sovereignty to ordain your life before you were conceived. Find security in this.

“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1: 26-27

When you feel insecure, remember you were made in the image of God himself.

Living, breathing human beings are designed to rule over everything on Earth, because we are the crowning point of His creation.

He designed you to be valuable. You are capable of embodying God’s communicable attributes including: goodness, hate, justice, knowledge, love, rationality, mercy, speech, truthfulness, and wisdom.

God does not make mistakes, because God is perfect.

Meditate and appreciate this.

We are all born with a void deep in our hearts. Real self worth comes from the intrinsic value we all have from God, not from external things.

It is easy to make the mistake of trying to find value in money, achievements, education, fame, or looks. Unfortunately these things will never fill the void that only God can fill.

The creator of the universe sees you as valuable and He designed you with unique character traits and strengths.

I encourage you to write down Genesis 1:26,27 and Psalm 139:13-16 on separate sheets of paper and hang them up on your bathroom mirror. Meditate and believe these words to be true, because God cannot lie.
