God’s Nature

God’s creativity and attention to detail is so evident in nature. Everything in its’ place, doing precisely what it’s supposed to do. My favorite place to be is outside, barefoot, with my toes wriggling in between blades of lush green grass. Each morning, in the dark hour upon waking, I take a moment to open the door and breathe in until my lungs are filled with cool, crisp air. As I watch the sun dance over the trees and homes, I smile as it continues to rise, eventually making its’ place for the day. I exhale slowly. I can’t help but feel so small in the most beautiful way. It’s humility and wonderment. It’s indescribable gratitude.

I had the opportunity to visit a field of tulips with my family and friends a few days ago. I spent most of my time watching Audri carefully choose tulips and arrange them into separate bouquets. Each bundle looked slightly different dependent upon who she was giving them to. It reminded me that God uses nature to speak to each of us differently. That He tailors His approach to us so that we don’t miss Him. While I was walking around observing these gorgeous flowers up close (each one slightly different from the next), I thought of these verses: “Ask the animals and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky and they will tell you; or speak to the earth and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord does this? In His hand is the life of every creature and breath of all mankind. Through Him all things were made. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant and everything in them; let all of the trees of the forest sing for joy.”

Although tulips can be used for cooking, they also serve another purpose. These flowers bring beauty to the world. God didn’t have to make flowers pleasing to the eye, but He wanted us to experience His presence even in the most intricate, every day things. God is not vanilla or unimaginative. He is extremely creative and innovative. He sees the bigger picture. In fact, He is the bigger picture. But He shows up everywhere—even in a field of flowers in the middle of a country town. Why? Because he wants us to remember Him as the big picture and see Him in the details.
