When the Mask Comes Off
Oct 25, 2025
Halloween is right around the corner.
Isn’t it interesting how, on the day of darkness—the day the world lifts up the underworld and honors the dead—we choose to wear masks? The origin of the mask dates back to ancient rituals meant to hide one’s identity from spirits. But over time, the mask became more than a costume. It became a symbol of deception—of pretending to be something we’re not.
It reminds me of the passage in Matthew 7:15,
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
Satan is the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing—draped in charm, charisma, and reason. He’s as alluring as the lead character in your favorite romance novel. He’s as beautiful as a Hollywood star. He is, as Scripture says, “disguised as an angel of light.” I don’t know who decided to dress him in a red and black onesie but that costume couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s persuasive in boardrooms and pulpits. He’s fluent in flattery and compromise.
All wolves devour. They have sharp teeth, not designed for nibbling. They stalk, they deceive, and they destroy. Sheep, on the other hand, are gentle and vulnerable. They depend on their Shepherd for safety. When a wolf sneaks into the flock wearing wool, it’s not for company—it’s for dinner.
And that’s the danger of our age: false spiritual teachings distort the Word of God, leading real believers astray while handing them a mask in return for their souls. So much looks like light, like progress, but it isn’t. So much sounds like truth, but it’s hollow. We live in a world that values a well-dressed lie more than an unvarnished truth. But God calls His people to discernment—to peel back the disguise and test the spirit behind the smile.
Jesus said in Matthew 10:16:
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
If you sense the Holy Spirit nudging you with unease, take a breath and pay attention. That’s His way of keeping you close, not fearful. It’s not about suspicion—it’s about staying sensitive to His voice.
While the world celebrates its masks this week, let’s remember: we’re not called to hide. We’re called to walk openly, safely, and confidently beside the Shepherd who never disguises Himself.
Cheering for you,
Ciara Laine
