A Hovering God

Sometimes, when I feel like I’ve been left alone or abandoned by God, I think of this verse, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” To hover means to linger, to wait for something in anticipation. When I consider the Spirit of God hovering over His early creation, it delights me and brings me peace. I’m a lot like the earth was back then—drained, unfinished, complex—and so I know that God is hovering over me too, waiting in anticipation for me to draw near to Him again. Soon after, I’ll be able to sense His presence all over my desperation. His hovering will replace the darkness in me, until all that remains is the reflection of His sparkle.
