6 christian journal prompts for a slower morning with God

Jun 22, 2026

Here’s the truth: most mornings, I wake up slowly.

I pull the curtains back, stretch, make myself a glass of water with electrolytes, then coffee too, obviously, and curl up for a few minutes with my journal and my Bible. It has become one of my favorite rituals. Not because it is highly optimized or part of some “perfect” morning routine, but because it gives me an authentic place to begin the day.

For a long time, I avoided getting back into my bed once I was up. If I had already made breakfast, or let the pup out, getting back under the covers felt… like I was doing something wrong. I think I had absorbed too much morning-routine advice: Make your bed first thing. Exercise before the day gets away from you. But I’ve learned that “setting my day up for success,” does not always have to look like speed. I don’t really come alive that way. I might be propelled by anxiety to get moving, true. But that is not the same thing as wholeness. So I’ve learned to accept that I need a slower start. Even when I worked typical 8-to-5 jobs, I’d wake up around 5:30am because I needed a few minutes to myself. A few minutes in the dark with the Father before the world started asking things of me.

I still do. I need time to unravel the thoughts and feelings that tucked themselves in and through me overnight. I need space to notice what I’m carrying before I start carrying everyone else. I didn’t set out specifically looking for Christian journal prompts to follow or a long, unrealistic quiet-time routine. But journaling has become one of the simplest ways I connect with God and with myself. Even if it’s only for ten or twenty minutes.

If you’re an overthinker, an over-feeler, or someone craving a slower, more honest start to your day, these Christian journal prompts are a great place to begin. All you really need is a laptop, or a pen and journal, a few minutes, and the willingness to tell the truth in the presence of Someone gentle.

So, from my cozy bed to yours, here are six Christian journal prompts for a slower morning with God:

  1. If I believed God was gentle with me today, what would I stop demanding of myself?
  2. What part of my life am I calling “waiting” that might actually be preparation?
  3. Where have I been asking God for clarity when He may be inviting me into trust?
  4. What would obedience look like this week if it did not have to look impressive?
  5. What fruit is growing in me that I keep overlooking because it is not obvious?
  6. What am I afraid God will ask me to surrender, and what might He be trying to give me in return?
